This synthetic octapeptide analogue of naturally occurring somatostatin (CAS 83150-76-9; molecular formula C49H66N10O10S2; molar mass 1019.26 g/mol; sequence H-D-Phe-Cys-Phe-D-Trp-Lys-Thr-Cys-L-threoninol acetate salt with a disulfide bond) has a longer duration of action than somatostatin itself and is used for acromegaly, carcinoid syndrome and VIPomas. Octreotide acetate suppresses secretion of gastro-entero-pancreatic peptide hormones and growth hormone release, while also slowing gastrointestinal motility and inhibiting gallbladder contraction.
