Also known as the magnesium salt of octadecanoic (stearic) acid, magnesium stearate is a white, combustible powder that solidifies at room temperature and is insoluble in water; this MAACCEL grade is supplied by Accent Microcell. It serves as a lubricant in tableting and pharmaceuticals, a drier in paints and varnishes, a flatting agent, stabilizer and lubricant in engineering plastics, a softening agent in talcum powder and cosmetics, an emulsifier in cosmetics, and an anti-caking agent in foods, and is considered safe for human consumption below 2500 mg/kg per day.
