Firocoxib is a selective COX-2 inhibitor (IC50 values of 0.13 microM for COX-2 and 7.5 microM for COX-1 in isolated cat blood) that suppresses LPS-induced prostaglandin E2 production in dog, horse, and cat whole blood ex vivo. In dogs and horses with osteoarthritis, it has been shown to reduce lameness, provide analgesia, and improve range of motion at doses of 5 mg/kg/day and 0.1 mg/kg/day respectively, and formulations containing it are used to manage osteoarthritis in these species.
