Additional Description:
Used as an anticoagulant in patients with unstable angina undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, bivalirudin is a synthetic 20-residue peptide that reversibly inhibits thrombin; once bound to the active site, thrombin can no longer convert fibrinogen to fibrin, the key step in thrombus formation. It is given intravenously, and because it can cause blood stagnation, monitoring hematocrit, activated partial thromboplastin time, international normalized ratio, and blood pressure is important.
