Supplied as yellow crystals or powder at minimum 98% purity by HPLC, it serves as an intermediate metabolite of natural retinoic acid with similar bioactivity but significantly better skin tolerance — retinoic acid's broad dermatological uses have been limited by the local irritation that retinal avoids.
