I have over 560 publications in the area of medicinal chemistry and drug synthesis, and have over 100 issued and pending patents in drug discovery. I am considered by my peers to be an internationally recognized expert in drug design and discovery. I also have significant expertise in prodrug and codrug design, drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and other areas of relevance to preclinical drug development. I have been a founding member of seven start-up drug discovery companies over the course of my career. Several of my discoveries have advanced to clinical status. I have one anticancer drug Valchlor®, that has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, and several other drugs in phase 1 and late phase 2 clinical studies, including the parthenolide analog, LC-1 (N,N-dimethylaminoparthenolide, DMAPT) a first-in-class NFB inhibitor drug for treatment of hematological cancers (AML), and the drug Ispronicline® (phase 2b) for the treatment of early stage Alzheimer’s disease. I recently received the prestigious 2010 American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Research Achievement Award in Drug Design and Discovery, and I was awarded a D.Sc. by the University of Manchester, UK, a research career award for my work in the discovery and development of drug molecules. My laboratory has provided graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scientists, and faculty with the opportunity to pursue both drug discovery and drug development research projects, which have been funded predominantly by the NIH.
