J. Daniel Bourland, MSPH, PhD, DABR, FAAPM Professor, Departments of Radiation Oncology, Physics, and Biomedical Engineering Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Wake Forest University Biographical Summary J. Daniel Bourland, MSPH, PhD, received the BS Physics and MSPH and PhD degrees in health and medical physics from UNC-Chapel Hill. He served as radiation oncology physics faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill and Mayo Clinic. He is now Tenured Professor of Radiation Oncology, Physics, and Biomedical Engineering, Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSM) and University (WFU), Winston-Salem, NC, where he has served for 30+ years. Bourland’s research interests include small-field dose calculations, gamma radiosurgery, imaging in radiation oncology, and radiation countermeasures. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiological Physics (DABR) and a noted practitioner in gamma radiosurgery. His past institutional leadership roles include Section Head of Radiation Physics, director of the initial WFU graduate program in medical physics in collaboration with Biomedical Engineering and Physics, Chair of the WFUSM Promotions and Tenure Committee, and President of the campus-wide WFU Faculty Senate. His past scientific and professional society service includes leadership on the governing boards and committees of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and the American Institute of Physics, and the written and oral examination committees of the American Board of Radiology. He recently served as the President-Elect, President and Board Chair of the AAPM (2021, 22, 23). He is a prior and current member of the FDA Radiological Devices Panel. He is an established educator and has served as dissertation research advisor and mentor to numerous graduate students and post-doctoral trainees in medical physics and biomedicine who are now leading and serving in academics, community practice, and government. Bourland is currently Director of the WFUSM Radiation Physics Core, which provides two specialized x-ray irradiators and one linear accelerator for the use of multidisciplinary biomedical and medical physics researchers. Bourland is a Fellow of the AAPM and recipient of lifetime achievement and service awards from the Southeast Chapter of the AAPM and the American Board of Radiology.
