A large-scale research project has demonstrated that human personality is shaped not only by environment and experience but also by genetic differences. The investigators identified over 1,200 genetic variants that correlate with the five major personality dimensions—openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism (the “Big Five”).
The study found that these genetically influenced personality traits may be connected to a range of life outcomes, including mental and physical health, educational attainment, occupational choices, lifestyle habits, and even decisions about parenthood. However, the researchers emphasized that no single gene or small set of genes can explain an individual’s personality or life choices. Each identified variant exerts only a very modest effect, underscoring the complex, polygenic nature of personality.
