Chinese teaching hospital in Shanghai, founded in 1864 as the country's first general hospital of western medicine and now affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, with campuses in the north and south of the city. Provides tertiary care across the specialties with strengths in ophthalmology, urology, haematology and cardiology, emergency and intensive care, teaches medical students and residents of the university, and runs its own clinical laboratories, pharmacy and a good clinical practice unit for drug trials with clinical research institutes.
