American private liberal arts college at Amherst in Massachusetts, founded in 1965 by the four neighbouring colleges and the state university as an experiment in student directed education, and a member of the Five College consortium. Teaches without conventional departments or grades, with students designing their own concentrations, and offers work in natural science including chemistry, biology, environmental science and public health alongside the humanities and arts, with its own teaching laboratories, farm and cross registration at the neighbouring institutions.
