German research institute of the Fraunhofer Society working in molecular biology and applied ecology, with its molecular biotechnology division at Aachen, applied ecology at Schmallenberg in the Sauerland and further sites at Giessen, Hamburg and Frankfurt. Runs regulatory ecotoxicology and environmental fate studies to good laboratory practice for chemicals, pesticides and pharmaceuticals, keeps the environmental specimen bank for Germany, and develops plant based production of pharmaceutical proteins, natural product screening and translational drug discovery.
