German national cancer research centre in Heidelberg, founded in 1964 and the largest biomedical research institute in the country, funded by the federal government and the state of Baden-Württemberg as a member of the Helmholtz association. Runs research programmes in cell biology and tumour biology, functional and structural genomics, cancer risk factors and prevention, tumour immunology, imaging and radiooncology and infection and cancer, works with Heidelberg University Hospital in the National Center for Tumor Diseases and the German Cancer Consortium, and runs technology platforms, a cancer information service and translational and clinical research including early phase trials.
